I wanted something deep enough to be able to add more than one skinny log to, AND have the cover fit correctly. We can easily fit several good sized logs in the pit and still use the cover. The side cutouts are great for air circulation. The grate works wonderful for everything from steaks to veggies! My boys like it for the obvious reasons: hotdogs and marshmallows. We have it on a two story wood deck. Instead of the expensive pads that they sell for under them to avoid embers from scorching or burning the deck, I went to Lowes and got 9 of the square concrete stepping stones. They made a nice 4ft x 4ft pad and only cost about $25.00. The mesh of the cover is so tiny that any embers escaping will not be large enough to even make it to the ground, let alone burn anything. I wanted a grill on top so I could cook me some hotdogs. And I wanted a deep pit to put some logs and just enjoy. This summer we have used this pit for just that purpose and more. My grandsons love making smores out back and sitting by the fire. After swimming all day, we make a campfire and just enjoy the stars. I love this pit, I would recommend it to my best friends and family. My daughter's boyfriend bought one for his mom and she loved it!

Fill with a couple inches of sandbox sand from HomeDepot and you're ready to go. My wife, kids and I have had loads of fun sitting around the campfire having a good time. We also cook on the grill that included and love it! To cover it, we bought a cheap tarp from HomeDepot and fold it under the 3 firepit legs...works great and survives the winds and rain!
